  • A high quality score, which improves your average position relative to competitors and lowers the cost per click (CPC).

    Search volume and competition

    Each keyword has a monthly search volume, depending on the chosen region. There is a maximum number of impressions per month, influenced by the seasonality of search behavior.

    There are also other advertisers, and the more popular a keyword is among advertisers (often high-intent search terms), the higher the cost per click (CPC).

    Costs and advertising budget

    The costs of a search campaign can be set with a daily budget. You will never spend more than what has been configured. Daily spending may vary, but on a monthly basis the budget is capped.

    Budgets can be set from 1 euro per day, though you will not get many clicks for that. With a budget of 50 euros per day, your monthly spend will never exceed 1,500 euros. My recommendation to start a campaign is a minimum budget of 1,500 euros per month.

    Campaign return on investment

    There are two ways to look at the return of a search campaign:

    Cost per acquisition (CPA) — The cost per sale or lead. This indicates what it costs to acquire a new customer or lead.

    Return on ad spend (ROAS) — The ratio of revenue to costs. The advantage over CPA is that it accounts for conversion value.

    In the case of a webshop, one conversion may have a higher order value than another, so you could spend more on keywords or target audiences that generate more revenue. These are the key performance indicators (KPIs) to steer your campaigns.

    Quality score

    A high quality score results in a better average position relative to competitors and a lower cost per click (CPC). This is Google's way of ensuring the user experience is as relevant and high-quality as possible.
